“Take Akufo-Addo Out Of Galamsey Debate, You Have Been In Office For 24 Months” – Miracles Aboagye
The Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has called on the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop bringing former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo into discussions about illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
According to a report by MyJoyOnline on October 31, 2026, Mr Aboagye made the remarks during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme, where he questioned the government’s handling of illegal mining.
He argued that the NDC had consistently criticised the previous NPP administration over the galamsey menace and had given Ghanaians the impression that it had better solutions to address the problem if elected into office.
However, Mr Aboagye maintained that the current government had been in power for 24 months and should now be judged by its own actions rather than continuing to attribute the challenges of illegal mining to the previous administration.
He further accused the NDC of having a history of tolerating illegal mining, arguing that the situation had become worse under the party’s previous periods in government. He also cited comments attributed to former Environment Minister Mahama Ayariga in 2013 regarding the challenges involved in fighting illegal mining.
The NPP communications director also compared the anti-galamsey measures introduced under Akufo-Addo’s administration with those of the current government, insisting that the previous administration had done more to combat the menace.
His remarks have added to the ongoing political discussions surrounding illegal mining in Ghana, particularly as concerns persist over the destruction of forest reserves, pollution of water bodies and the effectiveness of government interventions.
