Julius Malema says the EFF bought Floyd Shivambu his first pair of sneakers

During the EFF’s Tshela Thupa Rally at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on 31 October, EFF leader Julius Malema brought up how the party helped Floyd Shivambu when he had little, saying they bought him his first pair of sneakers and even helped build his mother’s house using the party’s money. Malema made the remarks while taking aim at his former deputy, who has since left the EFF and formed the Afrika Mayibuye Movement. The comments come amid an ongoing dispute between the two, with Shivambu previously accusing EFF leaders of benefiting from municipal tenders linked to bucket toilets in Ekurhuleni.

One thing the post leaves open is how Shivambu has responded to the remarks, since the post does not say whether he has commented since Malema spoke at the rally. The post also does not say what evidence exists for either man’s claims about the other. Those details matter because they would establish the basis of the dispute. Without them, the account rests on Malema’s speech, and his claim that Shivambu only started complaining after losing the tender remains his own assertion.

People reacting to the post focused on Malema’s remarks about the sneakers and the house, with some saying the details showed how much the party had done for Shivambu and others saying the dispute had become personal and petty. Some said Malema should focus on the EFF’s campaign rather than on his former deputy, while others said Shivambu’s accusations about the tenders deserved a serious response.

What remains unresolved is whether Shivambu will respond to Malema’s remarks or whether the dispute will continue publicly. The post does not establish what Shivambu said about the tenders or whether the allegations have been investigated. The public is waiting for more information, because the exchange has drawn attention to the party’s internal divisions without any confirmation of what actually happened.
