Eight Dead, 21 Rescued After Two Buses Collide on Elubo–Takoradi Highway

Eight people have lost their lives following a fatal road accident involving an Ivorian passenger bus and a parked Burkinabè bus at Azuletti, near Samenye, along the Elubo–Takoradi Highway.

The accident occurred when the Ivorian passenger bus crashed into the stationary Burkinabè vehicle, resulting in multiple casualties and leaving several other passengers injured.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were dispatched to the scene following reports of the collision to carry out rescue operations and assist passengers trapped in the wreckage.

According to information from the rescue exercise, firefighters managed to rescue 21 passengers from the accident scene, providing critical assistance to those who survived the impact.

However, seven victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while another passenger later died at the hospital after being transported for medical attention, bringing the total number of fatalities to eight.

The injured passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they received treatment for various injuries sustained during the collision.

The accident has once again drawn attention to the dangers associated with road crashes, particularly along major highways where commercial vehicles transport passengers over long distances.

Preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident suggest that speeding may have contributed to the crash.

Although investigations are expected to establish the precise cause of the collision, the suspected involvement of excessive speed raises concerns about the need for commercial drivers to exercise greater caution while using the country’s highways.

Driving at high speeds reduces a driver’s ability to respond effectively to unexpected situations, particularly when approaching stationary vehicles or encountering obstacles along the road.

The presence of a parked vehicle on a highway can also create additional risks for approaching motorists, especially when drivers fail to maintain a safe distance or exercise the necessary level of alertness.

The Elubo–Takoradi Highway serves as an important transportation route connecting communities and facilitating the movement of people and goods within the Western Region.

The latest accident has therefore highlighted the importance of observing road safety regulations and ensuring that vehicles are properly positioned when stopping along major roads.

The Ghana National Fire Service continues to play an important role in responding to road emergencies, with firefighters often required to rescue trapped passengers and provide assistance during serious collisions.

The loss of eight lives in the incident represents a tragic outcome for the affected families, while the survivors continue to receive medical attention following the devastating collision.

Investigations into the crash are expected to establish the circumstances that led to the Ivorian passenger bus colliding with the parked Burkinabè vehicle.
