Mamelodi Sundowns Eye Top Spot Ahead of Durban City Betway Premiership Clash
SUNDOWNS TARGET BETWAY PREMIERSHIP SUMMIT AS CARDOSO PREPARES SIDE FOR DURBAN CITY TEST
RUSTENBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 31 OCTOBER 2026
Mamelodi Sundowns are determined to strengthen their position in the Betway Premiership title race when they welcome Durban City for an important league encounter at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Tshwane giants head into the fixture knowing that victory could take them to the top of the standings, depending on the results elsewhere, as they continue their pursuit of domestic silverware under head coach Miguel Cardoso.
Sundowns have enjoyed a positive start to their league campaign, collecting seven victories and two draws from their opening nine matches. Their impressive record has kept them among the leading contenders, although Orlando Pirates have been applying pressure at the summit.
With three points available, Masandawana have a major opportunity to strengthen their title ambitions and send another warning to their domestic rivals.
However, Durban City are unlikely to make things easy for the hosts. The visitors arrive in Rustenburg hoping to produce a strong performance against one of the country’s most successful football clubs.
Eric Tinkler’s side have experienced a challenging league campaign, recording just one victory, four draws and three defeats from their opening eight matches. They will therefore be eager to improve their position and collect a positive result against the Brazilians.
Cardoso faces important selection decisions
Sundowns have been dealing with several injury concerns, with important players including Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Teboho Mokoena, Grant Kekana, Keanu Cupido and Kegan Johannes reported among those unavailable.
Despite those setbacks, Cardoso still has considerable quality within his squad.
The confirmed Sundowns starting XI features Ricardo Goss in goal, with Khulumani Ndamane, Malibongwe Khoza, Thabang Matuludi and Aubrey Modiba forming the defensive department.
Bathusi Aubaas, Marcelo Allende and Nuno Santos will operate in midfield, while Tashreeq Matthews, Cassius Mailula and Brayan Leon lead the attacking responsibilities.
The Brazilians will also be looking for greater efficiency in front of goal after struggling to convert some of their opportunities in recent matches.
Cardoso will expect his attacking players to demonstrate their quality and turn possession into goals.
Having recently secured a 1-0 Carling Knockout victory over Marumo Gallants, Sundowns will be hoping to carry that winning momentum into the league.
For the Brazilians, Saturday’s encounter represents more than another league fixture. It is an opportunity to strengthen their championship ambitions and remind their competitors that they remain serious contenders for the Betway Premiership crown.
