Today’s Headlines: INEC Removes Gwarzo’s Name From Updated Gubernatorial List; ABSU Gets New VC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has again excluded Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Kano State, from its updated list of candidates for the 2027 general elections. The commission indicated “Court Order” against his name and that of his running mate, despite previously approving his petition challenging their omission.
The development followed a series of legal disputes over the NDC governorship ticket, including a suit filed by the party at the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 27. INEC had earlier explained that the omission was linked to legal requirements concerning the submission of party membership registers. The latest decision has renewed uncertainty over Gwarzo’s eligibility to contest the Kano governorship election.
Abia State University, Uturu, has appointed Professor Amadike Ugbogu as its ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor, following approval by Governor Alex Otti. The appointment was recommended by the university’s Governing Council at its 161st regular meeting held on October 29, 2026, and will take effect on November 1.
Ugbogu, a Professor of Biochemistry, replaces Professor Ndukwe James Okeudo, whose two-year tenure began in November 2024. The university credited Okeudo’s administration with improving transparency, clearing staff promotion backlogs, strengthening academic standards and addressing delays in graduation through a triple convocation ceremony.
The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that security operatives repelled two successive attacks by suspected bandits on Ribah community in Zuru Local Government Area on October 30. The attackers first attempted to block the Ribah–Dirin Daji Road but were dispersed by a joint team of police, military personnel and local vigilantes. They later regrouped and launched another attack, firing from different directions.
During the exchange of gunfire, a 47-year-old security guard, Hassan Boder, was killed by a stray bullet at a filling station along Ribah–Kanya Road. Police spokesperson Usman said security operations had been intensified, with patrols ongoing to prevent further attacks and track down those responsible.
Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s Bundesliga clash after Harry Kane missed a second-half penalty. Kane, playing his first match since winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or, struck the crossbar from the spot before helping Bayern regain the lead by setting up Dayot Upamecano’s goal.
Dortmund equalised through Serhou Guirassy before Fabio Silva scored in the 89th minute to secure a point for the visitors. The result left both sides level on points at the top of the Bundesliga table, with Bayern maintaining first place on goal difference.
