2027: INEC Again Drops NDC Governorship Candidate From Kano List, Fresh Questions Emerge

According to a report by Vanguard on Saturday 31 October 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has again omitted the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and his running mate, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, from its updated final list of candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The omission was retained in the revised list released by the electoral commission on Saturday, despite the NDC’s earlier explanation that the absence of its candidates from the initial publication resulted from an error.

The latest development means that Gwarzo and Kwankwaso are still not reflected in INEC’s published list, while candidates from several other political parties have been included.

Among those recognised in the updated publication are candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Action Alliance (AA), African Action Congress (AAC), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

The APC ticket featuring Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Murtala Sule Garo appeared on the list; The PDP candidates, Abacha Muhammad Sani and Kibiya Yusuf Ado, were also included, alongside the ADC’s Ibrahim Ali Amin and Shehu Abdulkadir Bari.

The repeated omission comes weeks after the NDC raised concerns over the absence of its Kano governorship candidates from INEC’s initial list, insisting that the situation was caused by an administrative error.

Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata, Secretary of the Kwankwasiyya Caucus and the party’s House of Representatives candidate in Kano, had disclosed that the NDC received assurances that the omission occurred during the entry of the candidates’ details.

The party had expressed confidence that the issue would be corrected following the explanation.

However, Saturday’s updated publication has once again excluded both Gwarzo and his running mate, leaving the NDC’s concerns unresolved in INEC’s published record.

The development has drawn attention to the status of the party’s Kano governorship ticket as political parties continue preparations for the 2027 elections.
