Pirates Players Enjoy Eating Grilled Steak Chips After Defeating Kaizer Chiefs

Orlando Pirates moved to the top of the Betway Premiership table after securing a 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in an exciting Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers walked away with all three points after a competitive match that saw both teams create opportunities and fight for control. The result was particularly important for Pirates, who are now two points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the standings.

The opening stages were filled with energy as both teams showed a strong desire to attack. However, despite the intensity of the contest, neither side managed to produce enough quality in the final third during the opening half-hour.

The first goal came after Chiefs lost possession while trying to launch an attack. Pirates quickly took advantage of the situation, launching a counter-attack that ended with Yanela Mbuthuma finding the back of the net. His effort appeared to take a deflection before beating Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

The Buccaneers had little time to enjoy their advantage because Chiefs responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Pule Mmodi brought Amakhosi level after Mfundo Vilakazi delivered a cross that Sipho Chaine failed to control. Mmodi was in the right position to take advantage and score from close range.

Chiefs appeared more comfortable as the first half progressed, putting Pirates under pressure with their high pressing. The Buccaneers struggled to keep possession, particularly in dangerous areas, and went into the half-time break with the score level at 1-1.

Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made a change at the break, introducing Giamphani Lungu for Nkosikhona Ndaba. Deon Hotto, who had started in an unfamiliar right-back position, also moved to the left side.

The changes helped Pirates improve, and they eventually regained the lead through Tshepang Moremi. The goal came after another quick counter-attack, with the Buccaneers taking advantage of a numerical advantage as they moved forward.

Pirates had opportunities to extend their lead during the final 10 minutes but were wasteful in front of goal. Oswin Appollis also thought he had scored, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Despite missing chances to make the result more comfortable, the Buccaneers held on to claim a valuable derby victory. The three points took them to the top of the table, two points ahead of Sundowns, while Chiefs remained in fifth position, 11 points behind the league leaders. It was also Chiefs’ first league defeat under coach Fernando da Cruz.

Orlando Pirates players and a member of the technical team celebrated their 2-1 Soweto Derby victory by eating Kaizer Chiefs-branded chips in front of the crowd at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Photographs show the group laughing while enjoying packets of the Grilled Steak-flavoured snack, widely seen as a cheeky dig at their rivals. The win lifted the Buccaneers to the top of the Betway Premiership table. The playful celebration with Kaizer Chiefs-branded chips added to the fierce rivalry between the two Soweto giants and drew reaction from supporters.

The victory gave Pirates plenty of reasons to celebrate, both on and off the pitch. Beating their biggest rivals in front of a large crowd is always special, but moving to the top of the league standings made Saturday’s result even more important.

For Chiefs, the defeat will be disappointing, especially after showing good moments in the first half. They will now have to regroup and work towards returning to winning ways, while Pirates will look to maintain their position at the summit of the Betway Premiership.
