“Take Akufo-Addo Out of Galamsey Talk, You’ve Been in Power for Months” – Miracles Aboagye Tells NDC

According to a report by JoyNews on Saturday, October 31, 2026, the Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has challenged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take full responsibility for the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, instead of continuing to blame former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, Mr Aboagye expressed frustration over attempts to involve the former President in discussions about the current state of illegal mining in Ghana.

He argued that the NDC government had been in office for 24 months and should be held accountable for its performance in addressing the menace.

According to him, the NDC made several promises to Ghanaians during the 2024 general election and created the impression that it had a clear solution to the galamsey problem.

Mr Aboagye recalled how the Akufo-Addo administration faced strong criticism from the NDC and its supporters over illegal mining. He also referred to demonstrations organised in Accra against the former government, saying Akufo-Addo was heavily criticised over the issue.

He questioned why the NDC was now shifting attention to the previous administration instead of presenting its own achievements.

The NPP Communications Director further accused the NDC of enabling illegal mining since 2009. He claimed that the galamsey situation had consistently worsened whenever the party was in government.

He also referred to comments allegedly made by former Environment Minister Mahama Ayariga in 2013 about the difficulties involved in fighting illegal mining and the involvement of influential people in the practice.

Mr Aboagye maintained that the current administration had not demonstrated enough commitment to ending galamsey.

He also compared the efforts of the Mahama administration with those of the previous Akufo-Addo government, claiming that the current government had not achieved even 50 per cent of what the former administration did in the fight against illegal mining.

He challenged the government to provide evidence of its achievements and demonstrate its commitment to ending the menace.
