“Mbona Mnanifanyia Hivi” Man Cries Out to KPLC After Getting Fewer Units Than Friend for Same Amount
A Kenyan man has gone viral after complaining to KPLC over electricity tokens that he bought.
The man has raised questions about Kenya Power’s prepaid electricity billing after discovering that he and his friend received different units despite spending the same amount of money on tokens.
The man shared his concern in a video circulating on social media, where he explained that he had purchased electricity tokens worth KSh100 but was surprised by the number of units credited to his meter.
According to him, his friend had also spent Ksh100 on electricity tokens. However, a comparison of their purchase messages revealed that the two received different amounts of electricity.
The man appeared puzzled by the difference and called on Kenya Power to explain how the units are calculated. The video also featured screenshots of the two token transactions, displaying the units received alongside the various charges and deductions applied to each purchase.
His question has since drawn attention to an issue that has left many prepaid electricity customers seeking answers. Several consumers have previously questioned why the same amount of money can translate into different electricity units, even when making purchases within the same period.
Electricity token calculations are influenced by several factors, including the applicable tariff, monthly consumption levels, taxes and other statutory charges. As a result, customers may receive different units depending on their consumption and the charges applicable to their accounts.
The differences can be particularly confusing for customers who only look at the amount spent without checking the breakdown provided in their token purchase messages.
Following the circulation of the clip, social media users have been sharing their own experiences, with some comparing the number of units they receive when purchasing tokens worth KSh100. While some reported receiving only a few units, others indicated that their purchases yielded slightly higher amounts.
The discussion has renewed calls for Kenya Power to improve public awareness about prepaid electricity charges and provide clearer explanations of the factors that determine the units customers receive.
Although the man is seeking an explanation from the utility company, Kenya Power had not issued a response to his specific complaint at the time of writing.
