RIP: Nation Media Journalist Dies After Allegedly Being Bitten by a Snake at His Residence
Kenya’s media fraternity is mourning the death of experienced journalist Kitavi Mutua, who passed away while receiving treatment at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital in Nairobi.
Mutua, a long-serving Daily Nation correspondent based in Kitui County, died on Friday night while admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).Reports indicate that the veteran journalist was bitten by a venomous snake at his home in Kitui South approximately one week before his death.
The incident reportedly triggered serious health complications that eventually claimed his life.
Preliminary information suggests that Mutua experienced difficulties accessing medical attention shortly after the snake bite.
The delay is believed to have allowed the venom to spread through his body, eventually affecting some of his internal organs. His condition continued to worsen, forcing doctors to admit him to the ICU.
Unfortunately, he did not survive despite efforts to save his life.
Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu was among those who mourned the journalist, describing him as a mentor and friend who played an important role in her professional journey.Kasalu recalled how Mutua guided her about a decade ago when she was beginning her political career.
She credited him with helping her understand the relationship between the media and politics, as well as the importance of communicating effectively with the public.
The legislator praised him for sharing his professional knowledge and helping others grow.
She described his passing as a painful loss to his family, colleagues and the entire Kitui community.
Throughout his career at Nation Media Group, Mutua earned recognition for highlighting issues affecting residents of Kitui and the wider Ukambani region.
His reporting covered local politics, development projects and challenges facing ordinary citizens. Through his work at the Daily Nation, he helped bring stories from the region to national attention.
His death marks a major loss to Kenyan journalism, particularly in Ukambani, where he dedicated much of his career to giving local communities a voice.
