Kenya’s announcement of a high profile football match between Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam has sparked excitement beyond its borders with Tanzanian football fans now pushing for an equally impressive event at their new national stadium.
The debate has attracted attention on social media, where some Tanzanians have expressed their desire to see English Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United face each other in the opening match of the Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium.
Kenya recently confirmed that Bayern Munich and Ajax will meet on January 5,2027 to officially open the 60,000 seater Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi.
The announcement was made by President William Ruto on October 28 with both European clubs subsequently confirming the fixture.
The encounter is expected to attract football enthusiasts from different parts of Africa, particularly because it will bring two internationally recognised clubs to East African soil.
The suggestion of such a fixture has gained attention following a Facebook post by journalist Uwezo Ali on Saturday,October 31.
He reported that President Samia Suluhu Hassan was in communication with Arsenal and Manchester United over a possible high-profile match at the new stadium.
Although no official confirmation has been issued by the Tanzanian government or the two English clubs, the possibility has generated considerable interest among supporters.
Tanzanian influencer Samuel Kitangala also joined the discussion, proposing a different matchup. He suggested that Arsenal should face their city rivals Manchester City instead, adding a humorous twist to the growing conversation.
The Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium in Arusha is being developed as one of Tanzania’s major venues for the 2027 AFCON tournament. The facility is expected to accommodate more than 30,000 spectators and host major sporting events.
Meanwhile,Kenya’s stadium announcement has continued to generate conversations about the possibility of attracting more international football clubs to East Africa.
Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has also suggested that Arsenal and Manchester United could face each other in Nairobi around June or July 2027,after the current English Premier League season.
The developments have added excitement to the preparations for AFCON 2027,which Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will jointly host.
