A 23-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the robbery of a female e-hailing driver in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, after the attack was captured on dashcam footage that has since circulated on social media.
The suspect was arrested on Saturday, October 31, a day after the driver was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash at the corner of Lilly and Joel streets in Hillbrow/Berea.
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the arrest, adding that two other suspects remain at large.
“Hillbrow police have arrested a 23-year-old female suspect on Saturday, 31 October 2026, in connection with a robbery that was captured on dashcam footage,” Sibeko said.
Dashcam footage appears to show a woman approaching the driver’s vehicle after requesting a ride.
A brief argument ensued before two men appeared and robbed the driver of her money.
The driver managed to conceal her cellphone underneath another seat during the robbery and later escaped with it.
Sibeko confirmed that the victim subsequently opened a robbery case with police.
“The victim subsequently came forward and opened a case of robbery with the police,” she said.
Following the incident, Hillbrow Acting Station Commander Colonel Marite established a task team to investigate robberies in the area.
“Police are still searching for two additional suspects believed to be involved in the robbery,” Sibeko said.
The arrested woman is expected to appear before the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court on Monday, November 2.
In a separate incident in Tembisa, night-vision footage appears to show another e-hailing driver fleeing his vehicle during an alleged hijacking.
A woman wearing distinctive headwear is visible inside the vehicle before the driver abandons it and runs away.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. At the time of writing, no case had been opened in connection with the alleged attack.
The latest attacks come just days after five suspects were arrested following an armed robbery targeting a 20-year-old e-hailing driver in Eldorado Park.
The driver was ambushed on Maine Street in Eldorado Park Extension 7 on Tuesday, October 27, after responding to a ride request.
In that incident, a female suspect allegedly entered the front passenger seat and instructed the driver to wait for her brothers.
Two male suspects subsequently entered the vehicle before the driver was threatened and robbed of his belongings.
One suspect allegedly pulled the vehicle’s handbrake, while another suspect outside the vehicle fired a gunshot and demanded the driver’s cellphone.
The suspects allegedly stole cash, bank cards, the driver’s identity document and his driver’s licence.
A police operation subsequently resulted in the arrest of five suspects aged between 15 and 21.
The Eldorado Park attack also drew attention after dashcam footage captured the terrifying moments during which the driver was threatened.
