Boda Boda Fare Jumps From Ksh50 To Ksh70 In 1 Month As Transport Costs Now Outpace Everything Else
A boda boda ride that cost Ksh50 in September now costs Ksh70. New figures from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics show a 40 per cent jump in one month on the sampled route between Siaya town and Awelo.
The data comes from the October 2026 Consumer Price Index and Inflation Report released on Friday 30 October 2026. It shows transport as the fastest rising major expense category in the country.
Matatu fares have also gone up. The fare between Westlands and Kangemi in Nairobi rose from Ksh40 to Ksh50 which is a 25 per cent increase. The Karbanet to Nakuru fare climbed from Ksh600 to Ksh650 or 8.3 per cent.
Annual transport inflation stood at 17.1 per cent in October. That is far above the overall inflation rate of 7.3 per cent. Transport also recorded the highest monthly rise among 13 expenditure groups at 1.7 per cent.
Fuel prices added to the pressure. Petrol went up by 6 per cent from Ksh214.95 to Ksh227.85 per litre. Diesel rose by 4.4 per cent from Ksh219.04 to Ksh228.77. The bureau did not link the fuel changes directly to the fare increases.
The extra Ksh20 may look small but it adds up. A commuter making two one-way trips each working day would spend Ksh140 instead of Ksh100. Over 26 days that means Ksh1040 more every month. This is only an example based on the Siaya fare.
Overall inflation rose from 6.8 per cent in September to 7.3 per cent in October. Food inflation stood at 10.2 per cent. Yet transport stands out because people need it to reach jobs and schools and hospitals and businesses.
Many Kenyans now ask how much more they must give up.
