Tobi was stabbing me when Mathew went into the room with my wife who was begging them- Alhaji Wahab

A victim of suspected armed robbers arrested by the Oyo State Police Command, Alhaji Wahab Olatokunbo (surname withheld), has recounted how the gang allegedly invaded his home, killed his wife and left him with serious injuries after attacking him with knives and a machete.

According to Nigerian TRIBUNE, Wahab also narrated how the assailants allegedly attempted to sexually assault his wife’s younger sisters, whom he regarded as his own children. He said their actions jolted him from an almost unconscious state and prompted him to raise an alarm, disrupting the attackers’ plans.

Saturday Tribune had reported the arrest of three suspects identified as Matthew, Tobi and Ibrahim by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit following investigations into attacks on residents of Wofun, Olodo area of Ibadan, and Moniya.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the suspects allegedly invaded Wahab’s home, killed his wife, Mrs Rukayat, and repeatedly stabbed him. He added that they attempted to rape members of the family and carted away foreign currencies, mobile phones and other valuables.

One of the suspects, Matthew, reportedly admitted during an interview that he killed the woman by stabbing her.

When Saturday Tribune met Wahab, he appeared traumatised and was still recovering from his injuries. His left hand and right knee were bandaged, while he limped towards a seat before speaking with the newspaper. His unbuttoned shirt exposed a vertical surgical scar, reportedly from an operation he underwent at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The Ibadan indigene, who works as a travel consultant and also deals in vehicles, said the incident occurred in the early hours of August 4, 2026, when he was at home with his wife, two biological children and two sisters-in-law who had lived with the family from childhood and whom he regarded as his own children.

He explained that he was asleep at about 3am when the sound of his bedroom mosquito-net door opening woke him up. He immediately got out of bed to find out what was happening and saw his wife in front, followed by two men he later identified as Matthew and Tobi.

According to him, the men were armed with cutlasses, knives and a pestle. He said his wife had earlier woken up after hearing a noise from the kitchen and initially thought something had fallen. However, when she went to investigate, she discovered that armed robbers had broken the kitchen window and entered the house.

Wahab said the attackers subsequently led his wife into the bedroom, prompting him to get out of bed and plead with them to spare his life.

He alleged that Matthew raised the pestle he was holding and attempted to strike his head, but he managed to block the blow with his left hand. When the suspect attempted a second strike, he again tried to defend himself, sustaining a fracture in the process.

Wahab further alleged that Matthew entered the room with his wife while directing another gang member, whom he believed was Tobi, to stab him fatally. He said he continued pleading with the attackers not to kill him, but Matthew remained determined to harm him.

He also said, “Matthew went into the room with my wife while he instructed another gang member, whom I believe was Tobi: ‘stab him, stab him fatally’ (gun, gun pa). I started pleading with them not to kill me, but Matthew insisted.

“Tobi started stabbing me, and I was trying to stop him, dragging the knife with him. Matthew was in the room with my wife when she knelt and started begging them not to kill me, but from my back, Matthew struck my head with a machete.

“Blood started spurting from the deep cut. He moved in front of me and struck my head with the cutlass again, saying ‘ayé e maa bàjé ni. Sèbí o rò pé o lè bá wa fàá ni?’ (you are doomed, you think you can drag issues with us?).

He alleged that Matthew struck him on the thigh, close to his private part, with a cutlass, leaving him powerless. He said Tobi continued stabbing him before Matthew joined in, stabbing him on the left side, close to his heart. His intestines were also exposed, while Matthew allegedly struck his right knee with the pestle.

Wahab said that when the attackers noticed he was no longer moving, Matthew turned on his wife and stabbed her. He initially thought she had fainted from shock after she stopped responding and slumped to the ground.

He added that the attackers then searched the house, taking his and his wife’s mobile phones, as well as $400 from his wardrobe. They also attempted to take two laptops but eventually abandoned them. According to him, the suspects left with his car key and seven mobile phones in total.
