Chiefs Coach Has a Selection Decision to Make on Dortley

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz faces a crucial selection dilemma ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, with Rushwin Dortley’s return from injury raising questions about his involvement.

The defender’s comeback provides Amakhosi with an additional option at the back, but Da Cruz must carefully consider whether he is ready to handle the intensity of such a demanding encounter.

Dortley has been an important defensive option for Chiefs, and his absence forced the technical team to explore alternative combinations. His availability is therefore a welcome boost as the club prepares to face its fierce rivals.

However, returning from an extended injury lay-off does not automatically guarantee a starting position. Match fitness, physical condition and the ability to maintain performance levels over 90 minutes remain important considerations.

Starting Dortley could strengthen the Chiefs defence, but introducing him gradually may be a safer approach if he is still regaining full match sharpness.

Orlando Pirates possess attacking players capable of exploiting defensive mistakes, making organisation and communication essential for Amakhosi.

Da Cruz must therefore balance Dortley’s quality against the risks of rushing him into a high-pressure fixture.

Whether the defender starts or comes off the bench, his return offers Chiefs greater flexibility.

Ultimately, the coach’s decision will depend on Dortley’s fitness and readiness to cope with the demands of the Soweto Derby.
