According to Graphic Online which reported on October 28, the Ghana Police Service has arrested three suspects for their involvement in a series of robbery attacks on the Accra to Kumasi highway in the Eastern Region, which had created fear among motorists.
The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police David Fianko-Okyere, said the suspects had been on police wanted list for allegedly attacking vehicles at night and robbing passengers of cash, phones and other valuables.
According to CitiNewsroom which reported on October 28, DSP Fianko-Okyere said police retrieved from the suspects two locally manufactured pistols, several mobile phones, machetes and an amount of cash believed to be proceeds from their robbery operations on the highway.
He said the suspects will be arraigned before court after investigations and that police have intensified patrols on the Accra to Kumasi highway to ensure safety of motorists and to prevent further robbery attacks that endanger lives and property.
According to GBC Ghana Online which reported on October 28, the Ghana Police Service has advised motorists travelling on highways to avoid travelling at night where possible, to travel in convoys and to report any suspicious activities or persons to police for prompt action.
The Service noted that highway robberies often occur in isolated areas with poor lighting and urged drivers to be vigilant, to lock their doors and to avoid stopping for strangers who may be part of robbery gangs seeking to attack unsuspecting motorists.
According to GhanaWeb which reported on October 28, some drivers who ply the Accra to Kumasi highway have welcomed the arrest of the suspects, saying the robbery attacks had forced many drivers to avoid night journeys and had affected their business and transportation services.
They called on police to sustain patrols and to establish checkpoints at robbery-prone areas to deter criminals and to ensure safety for drivers, passengers and goods transported on the busy highway linking Accra and Kumasi.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it will continue to work to maintain law and order and to protect lives and properties, urging the public to cooperate by providing information that will help fight crime in communities.
The Service said it has intensified operations against criminal gangs across the country and will not relent in its efforts to make highways and communities safe for all citizens and travellers.
