Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma Sends Stern Message to President Cyril Ramaphosa Outside Durban High Court
March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma sent a stern message to President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday after she and other members of the movement appeared at the Durban High Court. The appearance related to an interim interdict that restricts their protests in parts of Durban.
Speaking to a crowd of supporters outside the court building, Ngobese-Zuma addressed the president directly. She wore a white T-shirt with the words “March and March Until We Win” as she spoke into a microphone. Supporters gathered around her, some holding up phones to record the moment. Her words focused on the group’s ongoing fight and the government’s response to their demands.
The interdict was brought by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. They asked the court to stop March and March from organising marches, processions and protest convoys in certain areas of eThekwini, including near the Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre on Che Guevara Road. Police cited concerns about violence, intimidation, property damage and possible threats to the centre after weeks of protests.
March and March is a civic movement that campaigns for stricter control of undocumented immigration. The group says South African citizens must come first for jobs, housing and public services. It has held several marches in Durban and other cities since early 2025. Ngobese-Zuma, a former radio presenter, founded the organisation and has led many of the demonstrations.
Friday’s court case followed an interim order that already limited the group’s activities. Judge Peter Olsen later ordered the movement to pause all demonstrations until after the local government elections on 4 November. Once marches resume, they will face strict rules, including limited hours and a ban on traditional weapons such as sticks and knobkerries. The matter returns to court in January.
Ngobese-Zuma has previously criticised Ramaphosa for not meeting the group or addressing their concerns after more than 20 months of protests. Her message outside court continued that line. Supporters remained outside the building after she finished speaking, while police kept a presence in the area.
The case highlights growing tensions in Durban over immigration and the right to protest ahead of next week’s elections. March and March says it will continue to push its demands through legal and peaceful means.
