Participants divided over vote-buying at ‘Democracy Is Not For Sale’ forum in Cape Coast
Participants at the Central Regional edition of the “Democracy Is Not For Sale” forum in Cape Coast have expressed divergent views on vote-buying, with some defending the acceptance of inducements while others called for the practice to be abolished.
The engagement, held at the Centre for National Culture in Cape Coast, brought together stakeholders and members of the public to discuss the growing influence of money and gifts in Ghana’s electoral process.
Some participants argued that they would continue accepting money and other gifts from politicians because elected leaders often fail to deliver development to their communities after securing power.
They said accepting inducements was one of the few opportunities available to them to benefit directly from politicians, particularly when their communities continued to experience inadequate infrastructure and other development challenges.
Others, however, condemned the practice, arguing that vote-buying undermines democratic accountability and allows individuals who rely on financial inducements rather than competence to gain political power.
They expressed concern that the practice could continue to bring corrupt leaders into government, as candidates with greater financial resources may have an advantage over those with credible development plans.
Some participants consequently called for stronger measures to eliminate vote-buying, insisting that elections should be determined by the policies, character and track records of candidates rather than the money or gifts they distribute.
The discussions also highlighted concerns about the responsibility of both politicians who offer inducements and voters who accept them.
Contributors stressed the need for sustained public education to help citizens understand the long-term consequences of selling their votes and the importance of demanding accountability from elected representatives.
The programme formed part of efforts to promote public awareness and encourage citizens to protect the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
