Worawora celebrates 2026 Akwantutenten Festival to honour ancestors’ historic migration from Ashanti Region
The people of Worawora in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region have celebrated the 2026 Akwantutenten Festival at Ofie Peposo, their ancestral home, commemorating the historic journey of their forebears.
The celebration marked another significant milestone in the festival’s 25-year history in the district.
It brought together traditional leaders, residents, visitors and delegations from the Asante Kingdom to honour the migration and sacrifices that shaped the Worawora community.
Known as “The Great Migration,” the historic journey began around 1732, when the ancestors of the people of Worawora migrated from Kuntanase in the Ashanti Region.
They travelled through Atibie, Akwamufie and Nkonya before eventually settling at their present home in Worawora.
The event featured colourful traditional performances, cultural displays and storytelling sessions depicting the struggles, resilience and determination of the ancestors during their long journey.
Participants described the celebration as an important opportunity to reconnect with their roots and preserve the history of the community for future generations.
Speaking to Adom News, Nana Otenpong, Oyoko Chief of Worawora, said the Akwantutenten Festival is organised to commemorate the historic migration of the community’s ancestors from the Ashanti Region to their present settlement.
He said the festival also provided the younger generation with an opportunity to learn about the history and traditions of the people and to appreciate the sacrifices that had shaped the development of Worawora.
Nana Otenpong called on investors and relevant stakeholders to invest in the community’s tourism sites.
According to him, developing the area’s tourist attractions would create employment and other economic opportunities for the youth.
Residents from Kuntanase and Worawora described this year’s festival as historic, stressing the importance of strengthening the relationship between the two communities.
The presence of chiefs and delegations from the Asante Kingdom further highlighted the historical and cultural ties between Worawora and its ancestral home.
