“It Will Be Game Over” – Cheruiyot Alleges What Might Happen If Sifuna Gets Backed By Gachagua
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has mocked a possible opposition ticket that would feature Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the presidential candidate. He said former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua would serve as the lead campaigner.
In a Facebook post on Friday the Kericho Senator said such a lineup was so weak that President William Ruto should focus on the serious work of transforming the Republic. He added that National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa could handle the little task ahead.
Cheruiyot dismissed the scenario as “Hio ni game ya kucheza with eyes closed”. The phrase describes a game that one can play with eyes closed.
His remarks come as opposition leaders continue talks on a united front. Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement has held high-profile meetings with Gachagua including one at the former Deputy President’s Wamunyoro home.
Some allies have floated Sifuna as a joint candidate. Gachagua has however clarified that his Democracy for the Citizens Party has not formally endorsed anyone. He said remarks by his deputy Cleophas Malala were personal views.
Gachagua has also indicated that he would support a consensus candidate. That includes Sifuna if he is selected. He has even said he would lead the campaign himself.
The post continues a pattern of sharp criticism from Cheruiyot toward Sifuna. He has previously described the senator as a passing cloud whose popularity is largely driven by social media. He has long presented the ruling coalition as focused on delivery while painting the opposition as disorganised.
The intervention shows how early positioning battles are taking shape ahead of the 2027 election. Ruling party leaders are already framing any Sifuna and Gachagua arrangement as convenient for President Ruto. The post drew thousands of reactions online.
