“I Can Report There’s No Dumsor in Ghana” – Mahama

According to a report by Citi 97.3 FM on October 30, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has declared that Ghana is no longer experiencing power outages, popularly known as “dumsor.”

Speaking at an event, the President stated, “I can report there’s no dumsor in Ghana. Everybody has adequate power.” His remarks were aimed at reassuring citizens and businesses who have long been affected by erratic electricity supply in the country.

President Mahama explained that his government has cleared debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and has put in place a payment plan for the remaining outstanding obligations. According to him, resolving these financial arrears has been critical to stabilising the power sector and ensuring consistent electricity generation.

The IPPs, which supply a significant share of Ghana’s electricity, had in the past threatened to reduce or halt production over unpaid debts. Such threats have historically raised fears of fresh power cuts, which disrupted businesses, strained households and slowed economic activity.

The term “dumsor,” derived from the Akan phrase “dum so,” meaning “off and on,” became a national talking point during previous power crises. It has since become shorthand for the frustrations Ghanaians associate with unreliable electricity supply and has featured prominently in political debates.

By declaring an end to the problem, the President is signalling a major shift in the management of the energy sector. Observers say sustained progress will depend on continued payment of obligations to power producers, adequate fuel supply and investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure.

The announcement is expected to generate wide public discussion, with some citizens welcoming the assurance and others calling for continued vigilance to ensure that stable power supply is maintained in the long term.

The President’s comments, which were widely shared on social media, underscore the government’s emphasis on energy stability as a key pillar of economic recovery and growth.

As the conversation continues, many Ghanaians will be watching closely to see whether the promise of uninterrupted power translates into lasting relief for homes, industries and businesses across the country.
