Angry Nairobi Residents Catch a Notorious Phone Snatcher, Beat Him for Minutes Before Escaping

Motorists and passengers in Nairobi’s Central Business District are being urged to stay alert after a suspected phone snatcher struck at Ambassador, taking advantage of slow-moving traffic to grab a device from a vehicle.

According to people who witnessed the incident yesterday, the suspect allegedly snatched the phone through an open window of a vehicle that was entering a stage at Ambassador.

The driver and other people nearby raised an alarm, drawing the attention of a crowd that quickly gathered around him.

Eyewitnesses said the angry crowd caught up with the man and gave him a thorough beating. The situation turned chaotic as more people joined in, and the suspect used the commotion to break free and escape on foot. His whereabouts remain unknown, and it is not clear whether the phone was recovered.

The incident has once again highlighted a familiar danger in the city centre, where heavy congestion often forces vehicles to a standstill.

Opportunistic thieves are known to exploit such moments, moving quickly between cars and targeting anyone who leaves a window open or a phone in plain sight.

Motorists and passengers are being reminded to keep their windows firmly closed or only slightly open when stuck in traffic.

They are also advised to keep phones out of sight, away from windows and dashboards, especially in crowded areas such as bus stages and busy junctions.

Residents have also been cautioned against taking the law into their own hands, as mob justice is illegal and can lead to serious injury or loss of life. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspects to the nearest police station or alert officers on patrol.

Many commuters say Nairobians deserve to move around their city without fear of losing their belongings to thieves.
