Ndegwa Njiru Breathes Fire at Sifuna, Warns Against Presidential Ambitions Without Mutual Respect
With just a few months remaining before the next General Election, political temperatures across the country continue to rise as leaders from both the Kenya Kwanza administration and the opposition intensify their campaigns to consolidate support and strengthen their respective political formations.
The opposition has maintained its determination to unseat President William Ruto, accusing his administration of failing to address the country’s challenges. Led by Democracy for Citizens Party leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the faction insists it is building a formidable political alliance capable of defeating Ruto’s camp.
The divisions and competing ambitions within the opposition were evident earlier today during the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Party, associated with former ODM Secretary-General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Speaking during the event, Sifuna indicated his willingness to use the new political outfit to pursue the presidency. Gachagua, on his part, pledged to support Sifuna should the wider opposition agree to rally behind his candidature.
However, the event took an unexpected turn when Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka faced a hostile reception from sections of the crowd in Lavington. Supporters reportedly booed him while chanting Sifuna’s name, forcing the Nairobi Senator to intervene and calm the situation.
Kalonzo condemned the conduct, warning Sifuna that he would reconsider his political engagement if such behaviour continued among his supporters.
His concerns were reinforced by lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, who insisted that personal attacks, disrespect and what he described as mediocrity would not propel Sifuna to the presidency. He called for mutual respect among opposition leaders.
The incident has exposed emerging cracks within the opposition, raising questions about whether competing presidential ambitions could undermine efforts to build a united front against President Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
