Meet Adeline Akufo-Addo: The Royal Princess Who Raised A President
This is Adeline Akufo-Addo, the mother of Ghana’s former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was more than just a mother of a President, she was a woman of royal heritage and national significance in her own right.
Born Nana Yeboakua Ofori-Atta, she was a princess from the prestigious Ofori Panin royal family of Kyebi, a lineage that has shaped Ghana’s history for generations.
She was married to Edward Akufo-Addo, who served as President of Ghana in the Second Republic, and in that capacity, Adeline served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1970 to 1972.
As first lady, she carried herself with grace, dignity and a deep sense of duty to the nation, standing beside her husband during a critical period of Ghana’s democratic journey.
She was the mother of a man who would later become President of Ghana. Without her, the story of Nana Akufo-Addo’s life would not have been the same, and Ghana wouldn’t have enjoyed the numerous projects that came under his leadership.
Sadly, she passed away on 21 March 2004 at the age of 86 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, leaving behind a legacy of royalty, motherhood, and service to Ghana.
