Mfundo Vilakazi Opens Up on Fernando Da Cruz’s Advice About Showboating at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder Mfundo Vilakazi has opened up about his development under coach Fernando Da Cruz, particularly regarding his approach to showboating and decision-making during matches.

The young midfielder has shown signs of maturity in his game, with his performances reflecting a growing understanding of what the team expects from him. Although Vilakazi is naturally known for his entertaining style and technical ability, he appears to be learning when to express those qualities and when to prioritise the team’s overall performance.

Showboating has been one of the talking points surrounding the youngster, especially because of his confidence and willingness to take on opponents. However, working under Da Cruz has seemingly helped him understand the importance of making the right decisions at different moments in a match.

Vilakazi explained that the coach’s guidance has influenced how he approaches certain situations on the pitch. Rather than completely abandoning his natural playing style, he is learning to recognise when individual skills are necessary and when keeping things simple would benefit the team more.

“If it’s not necessary for me to do those things I shouldn’t. But he didn’t say that I shouldn’t ever do it. But even I have told myself that the team comes first.”

His comments suggest that Da Cruz has not instructed him to stop expressing himself or displaying his technical abilities. Instead, the emphasis appears to be on understanding the appropriate moments to use those skills without compromising the team’s objectives.

For a young player still developing his career, finding the right balance between individual brilliance and collective responsibility is an important part of becoming a more complete footballer.

Vilakazi’s willingness to acknowledge this responsibility also reflects a positive attitude towards improving his game. At Kaizer Chiefs, where expectations from supporters remain high, his ability to combine creativity with discipline could become increasingly important.

The midfielder’s development will be closely followed as he continues to gain experience and opportunities. If he maintains this approach, he could become an even more influential player for Amakhosi while retaining the entertaining qualities that make him exciting to watch.
