Minority slams 9% public sector salary increase for 2027, calls it an insult to workers

The Minority Caucus on Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions in Parliament has criticised the proposed public sector salary increases for 2027 and 2028, describing the 9% adjustment for 2027 as an insult to workers amid rising household expenses.

In a press statement dated October 30, 2026, the caucus condemned the newly signed Multi-Year Public Service Remuneration Agreement, finalised on October 28, arguing that the increases would further erode workers’ purchasing power.

Under the agreement, public sector workers are expected to receive an 8% base pay increase and a 1% adjustment in conditions of service for 2027, bringing the total increase to 9%. The proposed increase for 2028 is 10%.

The Minority argued that the adjustments were inadequate, particularly when compared with the rising cost of living and increases in utility tariffs over the past two years.

It noted that public sector workers received salary increases of 10% in 2025 and 9% in 2026, but argued that these adjustments had failed to keep pace with cumulative inflation.
