Minority In Parliament Calls On Government To Reduce Fuel Prices To Ease Economic Hardship

The Minority in Parliament has called on government to reduce fuel prices to ease economic hardship on Ghanaians, who are struggling with high cost of living and transportation fares.

The Minority said the recent increases in fuel prices have led to increases in prices of goods and services, affecting livelihoods of ordinary citizens and businesses that depend on fuel for operations.

According to Graphic Online which reported on October 29, the Minority in Parliament has called on government to reduce fuel prices to ease economic hardship on Ghanaians, who are struggling with high cost of living and transportation fares.

The Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, said government should use revenue from increased crude oil production to cushion consumers and to stabilize fuel prices, instead of imposing more taxes that burden citizens.

According to CitiNewsroom which reported on October 29, Dr Forson noted that fuel prices have increased by over 30 percent in the past three months, causing transport operators to increase fares and traders to increase prices of food items and other commodities.

He explained that reduction in fuel prices will reduce cost of production and transportation, leading to reduction in prices of goods and services and easing hardship on Ghanaians who are already facing economic challenges.

According to GBC Ghana Online which reported on October 29, Dr Forson said government should also review taxes on petroleum products, including Energy Sector Levy and Special Petroleum Tax, to reduce ex-pump price and make fuel affordable for consumers and industry.

He stated that high fuel prices affect competitiveness of Ghanaian businesses and increase cost of living, urging government to prioritize welfare of citizens and to implement measures that reduce economic burden on households.

According to GhanaWeb which reported on October 29, some Ghanaians have supported the call by Minority, saying reduction in fuel prices will bring relief and will enable them to afford transportation and basic necessities that have become expensive due to fuel price hikes.

They called on government to listen to concerns of citizens and to take steps to reduce fuel prices and to stabilize the economy to improve living conditions and promote business growth in the country.

The Majority in Parliament has said government is working to stabilize fuel prices and to ensure economic stability, noting that global crude oil prices and exchange rate fluctuations affect local fuel prices and that measures are being implemented to address challenges.

The government has assured Ghanaians that it is committed to reducing cost of living and improving economy through prudent fiscal management, investment in productive sectors and policies that promote growth and job creation for citizens.
