Peter Obi, Kwankwaso Draw Crowd in Enugu, Challenge Tinubu Ahead of 2027 Election

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have held a town hall meeting in Enugu State as part of their political engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the Amadeo Event Centre, attracted enthusiastic supporters and party members who gathered to hear the opposition leaders present their vision for Nigeria.

Obi used the occasion to outline his plans for the country if elected president, promising to prioritise national unity, security, electricity, education, healthcare and the fight against corruption.

The former Anambra State governor also challenged President Bola Tinubu to travel across the country and account for his administration’s performance before seeking re-election in 2027.

According to Obi, Nigerians deserve explanations about how the billions of dollars borrowed by the Federal Government and revenue generated during the administration have been utilised.

He urged Tinubu to spend at least 36 days touring the country to explain his achievements and present his plans to Nigerians.

Obi argued that anyone seeking another presidential mandate must be prepared to account for their time in office and engage directly with citizens.

He also criticised the country’s worsening economic and security challenges, highlighting hunger, unemployment and insecurity as issues requiring urgent attention.

Speaking on his plans for Nigeria, the NDC presidential candidate promised to generate, transmit and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity if elected.

He said reliable electricity would help revive industries, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activities.

Obi also pledged to declare a state of emergency in education and the fight against corruption.

On healthcare, he promised to establish functional primary healthcare facilities in every ward across the country to improve access to medical services.

The former governor further assured Nigerians that his administration would promote transparency and accountability in public spending, insisting that government borrowing must serve the interests of citizens.

He also promised to take decisive action against insecurity, declaring that national security would be among his administration’s major priorities.

Obi urged Nigerians not to support him because of his ethnic background but to assess his competence and capacity to govern.

He said the 2027 election should be about choosing leaders capable of addressing the country’s challenges and delivering meaningful development.

The town hall also featured remarks from prominent supporters of the NDC presidential ticket, including political economist and professor, Pat Utomi, and Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central.

Utomi urged Nigerians to work towards political change in 2027, stressing the importance of participating in the electoral process and protecting their votes.

He expressed confidence in the Obi-Kwankwaso partnership, describing it as an opportunity to redirect the country’s development.

Similarly, Umeh described the two politicians as leaders with the experience and commitment required to serve Nigeria.

He urged supporters to mobilise voters across the country, expressing confidence in the ticket’s prospects and commending Kwankwaso for helping to strengthen its appeal in northern Nigeria.

The NDC’s Enugu governorship candidate, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, also called for national unity, insisting that the political movement was not simply about producing an Igbo president but building a country that works for everyone.

The meeting came amid controversy over the initial withdrawal of the Amadeo Event Centre as the venue for the gathering.

The NDC had alleged that its booking was withdrawn shortly before the scheduled event, raising concerns about possible political interference.

However, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah denied involvement, describing allegations that he ordered the cancellation as false.

The event centre subsequently explained that the venue had initially been booked by the Nigeria Institute of Healthcare Givers and Medical Social Work Practitioners for a national meeting.

According to the management, it withdrew the initial approval after political party decorations were brought to the facility, which it said violated the booking arrangements.

The centre, however, later permitted the gathering to proceed as a youth town hall meeting, saying the decision was taken to prevent a breakdown of peace.

The controversy did not ultimately prevent Obi and Kwankwaso from engaging supporters in Enugu.

The meeting forms part of the NDC’s efforts to build nationwide support ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the party positioning its candidates around national unity, economic recovery, security and accountable leadership.
