My Dad Wouldn’t Hear of Uzor Being An Actor; He Didn’t Think That Acting Was Anything Serious-Arukwe

Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has revealed that his father initially opposed his decision to pursue acting, viewing the profession as an unserious career choice despite his son’s passion for the performing arts.

Arukwe made this known during an interview on CreativiTea with Linda on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while discussing his upbringing, family background and the challenges he faced in pursuing his ambition of becoming an actor.

The award-winning actor explained that his father, whom he described as a serious-minded person, struggled to understand his interest in the entertainment industry and did not consider acting a worthwhile profession.

According to Arukwe, his father believed that he and others interested in the arts were not taking their future seriously, making it difficult for him to gain his father’s support for his chosen career path.

Despite the lack of initial encouragement, Arukwe remained committed to acting, a passion he said had followed him from childhood. He recalled spending time watching television programmes and studying the performances of actors, often imitating their voices and mannerisms when he was alone.

His determination to pursue the profession continued even after he graduated with a degree in Economics from Abia State University. He subsequently spent about 10 years working in the corporate sector while attending auditions and accepting acting roles before eventually focusing on entertainment full-time.

Reflecting on his father’s initial reservations about his career choice, Arukwe said, “My father wouldn’t hear of Uzor being an actor because he’s a very serious-minded person. He didn’t really think that art was anything serious; he just thought we were all fooling ourselves.”

The actor’s account highlights the challenges he faced in convincing his family that acting was more than a passing interest, as he continued pursuing his ambition despite the reservations surrounding his chosen profession.
