Dr Callistus Mahama Says Both NPP and NDC Have Lost Elections Under EC Chairs They Appointed
Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to President Mahama, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to show “greater humility” in the ongoing debate over appointments to the Electoral Commission (EC), according to a TV3 Ghana report dated 29th October 2026.
As conversations continue about how the leadership of the country’s electoral body should be determined, Dr. Mahama observed that both parties have lost elections under EC chairpersons appointed by their own governments. His point, in effect, is that appointing the EC chair does not guarantee a party electoral success, and that neither side is in a position to claim the high ground on the issue.
The Commission is currently chaired by Jean Mensah and remains at the center of public discussion about the credibility of Ghana’s electoral process.
Rather than trading accusations, Dr. Mahama encouraged the two major parties to approach the matter with restraint and mutual respect. His appeal reflects a desire for a more measured tone in a debate that often becomes heated along partisan lines.
The intervention comes at a time when the independence and impartiality of the EC continue to matter to Ghanaians across the political spectrum. A credible electoral body is widely regarded as essential to public trust in the democratic process, and how its leadership is selected is therefore a question of national importance.
As the discussion continues, many will be watching to see whether the NDC and the NPP take up his call and engage with each other more constructively. Whether the two parties can move beyond blame and toward a shared understanding on EC appointments may shape not only the current debate but also confidence in future elections.
