President Ramaphosa Deploys Army To KZN To Crush Vigilante Attacks On Foreigners

The president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has warned strongly against acts of vigilantism and violence against foreign nationals, stressing that the state will crack down on lawbreakers regardless of whether they target South Africans or foreigners.

During an ANC campaign rally in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, Ramaphosa spoke about the rising tensions caused by anti-immigration demonstrations and grassroots movements in major cities. Officials from the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJoints) and Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, who is in charge of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, have informed the President that he has received comprehensive operational reports on security interventions in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and the Eastern Cape. According to him, the South African Police Service (SAPS) needed military reinforcement to help keep the peace and stabilize unstable commercial zones, so the president authorized the deployment of 510 SANDF troops under Operation Prosper until November 30.

Public safety and immigration enforcement are explicitly reserved for the state, according to Ramaphosa. He emphasized that no one has the authority to assume the role of the state by engaging in informal policing operations, verifying paperwork, or forcibly removing citizens.

As the government continues to prioritize combating illegal migration and strengthening national borders, the President reaffirmed the constitutional rights of all South Africans and emphasized that those responsible for xenophobic violence, assault, or property destruction will face swift prosecution as the province’s authorities work to restore peace and order.
