Kenyans React as Gachagua Reveals What Sifuna Told Him When Asked Why He Supported His Impeachment
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed how Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna explained ODM’s role in his impeachment, saying the response convinced him that the senator was acting out of political interests rather than personal hatred.
Speaking about their meeting, Gachagua said he directly asked Sifuna how they could work together after ODM supported his removal from office in October 2024.
Gachagua said he wanted to understand Sifuna’s position, given that the senator belonged to a political camp that had opposed him during the impeachment process.
According to Gachagua, Sifuna explained that ODM viewed him as a political opponent and saw his removal as a way of weakening his influence in the Mount Kenya region.
Sifuna reportedly argued that the political sides could have acted similarly if their positions had been reversed.
Gachagua said he found the explanation convincing and agreed with the reasoning presented by the Nairobi senator.
“I agreed with him 100%,” Gachagua said, according to the account of their conversation.
The former deputy president explained that he did not consider Sifuna’s actions a betrayal because they had never belonged to the same political camp.
Instead, Gachagua accused President William Ruto and some of his Kenya Kwanza allies of betraying him, arguing that they had worked together before his removal from office.
He also singled out National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi over their roles in the impeachment process.
Gachagua’s remarks come as political leaders continue to explore new alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The DCP leader has been engaging leaders from different political camps as opposition figures discuss possible cooperation against Ruto’s re-election bid.
He has also said that politicians seeking to join the Democratic Change Party will be allowed to follow the party’s registration procedures.
The revelation about his meeting with Sifuna offers a glimpse into the political discussions shaping relationships among leaders who previously stood on opposing sides.
As the 2027 race draws closer, will their growing political cooperation reshape Kenya’s opposition politics?
