Mvurya reveals why Talanta Stadium’s Bayern-Ajax match matters for Kenya
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has explained why the Bayern Munich versus Ajax Amsterdam friendly scheduled for January 5, 2027, will be crucial to Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a statement on Friday, October 29, 2026, Mvurya said the high-profile encounter between the German giants and their Dutch counterparts would provide an opportunity to test Kenya’s readiness to host major international football events.
“The forthcoming official unveiling of the Raila Odinga International Stadium – Talanta Sports City, featuring a high-profile encounter between German giants FC Bayern München and Dutch powerhouse AFC Ajax, will provide a critical dress rehearsal,” Mvurya said.
He added that the match would test the country’s operational systems, security arrangements, logistics, crowd management and overall fan experience ahead of AFCON 2027.
Mvurya made the remarks while unveiling the AFCON PAMOJA 2027 Local Organising Committee (LOC) Standing Committee, which has been tasked with coordinating and overseeing Kenya’s preparations for the tournament.
The CS said the committee had been selected based on its members’ professional expertise, leadership and experience.
“The committee brings together distinguished individuals whose collective capabilities will be instrumental in delivering a championship befitting Kenya’s ambitions as a leading sporting destination,” he said.
Mvurya said the committee carried the responsibility of delivering a tournament that would bring pride to the country while creating lasting benefits in sports development, tourism, investment and economic opportunities.
With less than eight months remaining before AFCON 2027 kicks off, Mvurya challenged the committee to move from planning to execution.
“I challenged the committee to move decisively from planning to execution, prioritising operational readiness, effective coordination, strategic partnerships, financial accountability and strict adherence to delivery timelines,” he said.
Kenya is preparing to host the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania, in what will be the first AFCON edition jointly staged by three countries.
The Bayern-Ajax fixture will offer organisers an opportunity to assess stadium operations, security arrangements and crowd management before the continental tournament begins.
The event will also give Kenya an opportunity to identify gaps that could affect the delivery of major international football matches.
The stadium is expected to play a key role when Kenya co-hosts AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
The January encounter will therefore serve as an early test of the country’s ability to host an international football spectacle ahead of the continental championship.
