Kaizer Chiefs Share Positive Update on Rushwin Dortley After Injury Return

Kaizer Chiefs Celebrate Rushwin Dortley’s Emotional Return After 19 Months

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has expressed his admiration for Rushwin Dortley following the defender’s emotional return to competitive football after an extended period on the sidelines.

Dortley made his long-awaited comeback during Amakhosi’s impressive 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout on Tuesday, marking a significant moment for both the player and the Soweto giants.

The Bafana Bafana international had been unavailable since 1 March 2025 after suffering a serious knee injury that required two operations. His recovery proved to be a lengthy and demanding process, keeping him out of action for approximately 19 months and causing him to miss 64 consecutive matches.

For a player who had established himself as an important defensive option at Naturena, the prolonged absence was a difficult setback. However, his return to the pitch represents a significant milestone in his determination to regain full fitness and resume his football career.

Motaung Jr took to Instagram to celebrate the defender’s comeback, praising his mentality, commitment and work ethic throughout a challenging period.

“After such a long, tough injury, God opens the way for you to be back with your brothers on the field. Great mindset and work ethic, big player! Great to see you on the pitch with your teammates, doing what you love,” Motaung Jr wrote.

The message reflected the importance of Dortley’s return to the club, particularly after the uncertainty and frustration that often accompany serious injuries.

For Chiefs, having the defender back available provides another option as the team continues its campaign across domestic competitions. His return also gives the technical team an opportunity to gradually rebuild his match fitness while carefully managing his workload.

Dortley’s comeback was made even more encouraging by the fact that he completed the entire 90 minutes against TS Galaxy. Rather than simply making a brief appearance, the defender demonstrated that he was ready to contribute to the team’s performance.

He was also involved in the build-up to Wandile Duba’s third goal, offering a reminder of the composure and quality he can bring to the Chiefs defence.

The 3-0 victory provided the perfect setting for his return, allowing Amakhosi to progress in the Carling Knockout while celebrating the availability of a player who had endured a difficult period away from the game.

Nevertheless, the biggest challenge for Dortley will be maintaining his fitness and building consistency as the season progresses. After such a lengthy absence, managing his recovery carefully will be essential to ensuring that he can contribute regularly without risking another setback.

Dortley’s return represents more than just another player becoming available for selection. It is also a reminder of the determination required to overcome a serious injury and return to professional football.

Missing 64 consecutive matches would test any player’s patience, but the defender has finally returned to the environment where he belongs.

For Kaizer Chiefs, his recovery could prove valuable as the club seeks greater stability and depth in its defensive department. His experience with Bafana Bafana also makes his progress worth monitoring, although any international recall will depend on his performances and fitness.

For now, Dortley can take satisfaction in completing his first match after 19 difficult months away from competitive action.

With Motaung Jr publicly recognising his determination, the defender will hope to build on this encouraging return and establish himself as a regular presence once again.

After two operations and a lengthy rehabilitation journey, getting back onto the pitch was an achievement in itself. The next step is turning that emotional comeback into a consistent run of performances for Amakhosi.
