Jessica Appiah named player of the Match after Ghana’s win over Argentina
Jessica Appiah has been named Player of the Match following her outstanding performance in Ghana’s 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Argentina in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Black Maidens forward played a decisive role in the encounter, scoring Ghana’s opening goal after connecting with Cynthia Obinsrewuo’s square pass to give the team an early advantage.
Appiah continued to pose a threat to the Argentine defence as Ghana battled to secure qualification for the quarter-finals.
The match became increasingly challenging for the Ghanaian side after Hajara Adam was sent off with 13 minutes remaining, leaving the Black Maidens to fight with 10 players.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Appiah remained influential in attack as Argentina fought back to force the contest into a penalty shootout.
The forward capped her impressive display by converting the decisive spot-kick after Argentina’s Oriana Gomez missed her attempt, sealing Ghana’s 5-4 victory and sending the team into the last eight.
Her match-winning contribution earned her the Player of the Match award, recognising her impact at both ends of a dramatic contest.
