Henry to Visit Derby: Thierry Henry Set for Sold-Out Soweto Showdown at FNB Stadium
Football legend Thierry Henry will be at FNB Stadium on Saturday for the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. Premiership sponsors Betway confirmed that their brand ambassador will join thousands of fans for one of South Africa’s biggest matches.
The former Arsenal and France star is expected to take in the full atmosphere when the Buccaneers host the Amakhosi in the Betway Premiership. Kick-off is at 15:30. The fixture is sold out, with a crowd of around 90,000 expected at the Calabash.
Henry said he knows how much the derby means to local supporters. “I’ve experienced some incredible football rivalries around the world, and I know how much the Soweto Derby means to supporters in South Africa. I’m excited to experience that atmosphere at FNB Stadium and to meet some of the fans who make the occasion what it is,” he said.
As part of his visit, Henry will also meet and present the prize to the winner of Betway’s S’bonise & Win campaign. The promotion celebrates fans who show their team spirit through their colours and regalia. Betway account holders stand a chance to win up to R30,000 in cash.
His appearance adds extra flavour to a match that already forms part of the Premier Soccer League’s ’96-’26 commemorative campaign, marking 30 years of the league. Both teams enter the derby unbeaten in the league after eight matches. Pirates sit second on the table, while Chiefs are looking to close the gap on the leaders.
Henry needs little introduction. He won the 1998 World Cup with France, became an Arsenal icon during the Invincibles era, and later lifted the Champions League with Barcelona. Just days before arriving in Johannesburg, he co-hosted the Ballon d’Or awards in London.
For many South African fans, seeing a player of his stature in the stands will make an already special occasion even bigger. The Soweto Derby is known for its noise, colour, and fierce rivalry, and Henry is keen to experience it first-hand.
With tickets long gone and security plans in place for the huge crowd, all eyes will be on FNB Stadium this Saturday as the two Soweto giants clash—and as one of world football’s greats takes it all in.
