David Mahlobo accused of authorizing R12 million EFF spy operation
Former State Security Minister David Mahlobo has reportedly been implicated in allegations surrounding a secret R12 million cash fund allegedly intended to conduct surveillance on the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and recruit informants within the political party.
The allegations emerged during proceedings at the Pretoria High Court, where a confidential state witness reportedly testified that funds were distributed on Mahlobo’s direct instructions. According to the testimony, the money was allegedly used to support intelligence operations targeting the EFF, raising questions about the purpose of the operation and how public funds were managed.
The witness further alleged that R160,000 was paid directly to an individual working in Mahlobo’s office. The reported payment has added another dimension to the allegations, particularly regarding the involvement of officials connected to the former minister and the handling of money allocated to intelligence activities.
One of the most significant concerns surrounding the alleged operation is the apparent lack of accountability for the funds. Of the R12 million reportedly allocated to the operation, only approximately R1 million has been accounted for, leaving about R11 million unaccounted for.
The missing funds have raised questions about whether proper financial controls were in place and who was responsible for overseeing the money. The allegations also place the spotlight on the procedures governing secret intelligence expenditure, where the confidential nature of operations can make independent oversight and accountability particularly important.
The case has also drawn attention to the relationship between state intelligence structures and political organisations. Allegations that public resources may have been used to monitor a political party could raise broader concerns about the independence of intelligence institutions and the potential use of state resources for political purposes.
Meanwhile, the intelligence officials standing trial have reportedly maintained that they were acting on instructions from senior authorities. Their position raises questions about the chain of command within the intelligence structures and the extent to which responsibility for the alleged operation may extend beyond the officials currently facing trial.
The proceedings are expected to shed further light on how the alleged fund was established, how the money was distributed and what ultimately happened to the portion that remains unaccounted for.
However, the allegations against Mahlobo and the other individuals involved must be considered within the context of the ongoing legal proceedings. The testimony presented in court does not, on its own, establish guilt, and the claims remain subject to the legal process.
As the case continues, attention is likely to remain focused on the evidence presented before the court, the alleged involvement of senior officials and the outstanding questions surrounding the R12 million fund.
