PANIC IN LINDA MWANANCHI: Sifuna Left Stranded as Mt. Kenya Block Refuses to Yield

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has dealt a severe political blow to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna by publicly clarifying that the party has not endorsed him as the opposition’s 2027 presidential flagbearer.

In a televised interview, Gachagua forcefully disowned declarations made by DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, who had claimed that top leadership had already agreed to back Sifuna’s presidential bid.

Gachagua asserted that Malala was merely expressing a personal opinion and had zero constitutional authority to dictate party policy or announce presidential ticket decisions on behalf of the DCP.

This sharp disavowal comes at a disastrous time for Sifuna, effectively undercutting his momentum just as his Linda Mwananchi movement prepares for its high-octane political party launch at its Lavington headquarters.

By explicitly denying that any consensus has been reached, Gachagua punctured the narrative that Sifuna had successfully locked down the vast Mount Kenya voting bloc behind his candidacy.

The former Deputy President’s insistence that official party communications must come strictly from himself or the Secretary-General leaves Sifuna’s presidential machinery without the crucial cross-regional endorsement needed to legitimize his single-ticket ambition.

The public rejection exposes widening fractures within the emerging opposition alliance and severely weakens Sifuna’s leverage in ongoing negotiations with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Gachagua highlighted that members within his own camp are actively lobbying for alternative ticket configurations, signaling that the DCP intends to drive a much harder bargain before committing its electoral base.

By labeling Malala’s premature announcement a personal crusade rather than a sanctioned party outcome, Gachagua has effectively reset the flagbearer race, forcing Sifuna back to square one in his quest to build an unassailable opposition platform.

Ultimately, Gachagua’s calculated intervention leaves Sifuna’s campaign facing tactical paralysis and heightened uncertainty ahead of the 2027 polls.

State House handlers and rival political formations are already capitalizing on the public friction, citing the fallout between Gachagua and Malala as evidence of chaotic disunity within the anti-incumbency front.

Unless Sifuna can rapidly repair relations with the DCP chief and secure formal, written backing from key coalition partners, Gachagua’s stern refusal to validate his endorsement threatens to relegate the Linda Mwananchi movement to a secondary player in the presidential contest.
