The four face allegations that they misrepresented themselves to secure the agreement, with the state claiming there’s prima facie evidence against them.

While the allegations took centre stage in court, the accused also caught attention with their smart appearance.

Matlala looked sharp and neatly dressed, while his wife and the other woman in the group were equally well turned out. The ladies arrived looking polished and elegant, adding a touch of style to the serious court proceedings.

The matter relates to allegations that the accused misrepresented themselves to secure a lease agreement for a residential property.

According to the state, they paid for the lease and occupied the property for a year despite having signed a two-year contract.

The lease was reportedly cancelled around April 2026.

Matlala previously appeared alone in the same court on Wednesday, 14 October, when he abandoned his bail application.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokeswoman Lumka Mahanjana confirmed at the time that Matlala abandoned his bid for freedom. The state had intended to oppose his bail application.

According to the NPA, he faces two counts of fraud, two counts of uttering, forgery and contravention of the Identification Act.

His three co-accused, including his wife, were previously granted R20 000 bail each on 23 September.

The state didn’t oppose their release on bail.

The prosecution has maintained that there’s prima facie evidence against the accused, which is why the matter was enrolled in court.

The allegations have not yet been tested in court and all four accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case was postponed to 11 February 2027 for further investigations.
