The GoldBod Losses Finally Explained By BoG Governor Dr Asiama – Massive Reactions Online
Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has used his official Facebook page to clarify the widely discussed GH¢21 billion loss associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Program, popularly known as GoldBod.
The Governor’s explanation has continued to attract reactions from Ghanaians, with many taking to social media to express their opinions and debate the issue.
According to Dr. Asiama, the entire GH¢21 billion does not represent an actual financial loss. He explained that approximately GH¢16 billion to GH¢17 billion of the reported amount constitutes an accounting exchange loss rather than money that has disappeared. In other words, a significant portion of the figure reflects how the transactions were valued and recorded in the Bank of Ghana’s accounts, not the loss of physical funds.
The issue stems from the difference between the exchange rate used to purchase gold from small-scale miners and the official interbank rate the Bank of Ghana is required to apply in its financial records under International Monetary Fund (IMF) requirements. Consequently, even when gold is sold at its market value, differences in exchange rate calculations can produce figures that appear to indicate a financial loss on paper.
The explanation comes amid ongoing public debate over how a government-backed initiative could report such a substantial loss without the entire amount representing missing money. Many Ghanaians have questioned the financial implications of the program, making the distinction between actual losses and accounting-related exchange differences particularly important.
Dr. Asiama’s clarification could help restore public confidence in the program if citizens accept the explanation. Nevertheless, it also raises questions about whether the existing accounting approach provides a clear picture of the program’s financial performance and whether changes may be necessary to improve transparency and public understanding.
