President Ramaphosa Says Government Will not Tolerate Attacks on Foreign Nationals

President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned that the government will not tolerate violence against foreign nationals, stressing that anyone involved in criminal activities will face arrest and legal consequences.

Ramaphosa made the remarks while campaigning for the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal, where tensions have risen amid anti-immigration protests and concerns about public safety.

The President urged residents not to take the law into their own hands, emphasising that immigration enforcement and the maintenance of law and order are responsibilities of the state.

His comments come amid unrest in Durban linked to demonstrations against foreign nationals. Reports surrounding the protests have included allegations of looting and the killing of a foreign national, raising further concerns about violence and the safety of affected communities.

In response to the security situation, Ramaphosa authorised the deployment of 510 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to KwaZulu-Natal under Operation Prosper.

The soldiers are expected to support the South African Police Service in maintaining law and order, with the deployment authorised to continue until 30 November 2026.

The intervention is intended to assist police in responding to unrest and preventing further violence.

Ramaphosa’s message reinforces the government’s position that grievances relating to immigration must be addressed through lawful processes rather than intimidation, attacks or vigilantism.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring developments as efforts to restore stability in affected areas proceed.
