The race for the Teso North parliamentary seat is beginning to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election, with General Service Unit (GSU) officer Patrick Omasete emerging as one of the figures seeking to unseat incumbent MP .

Omasete is expected to campaign on a platform centred on accountable leadership, youth empowerment, improved public service delivery and accelerated development across the constituency. His supporters argue that his background in the disciplined forces has equipped him with leadership, integrity and a results-oriented approach to public service.

The contest is, however, expected to be an uphill battle. Kaunya remains an established political figure with the advantages of incumbency, including an existing grassroots network and the opportunity to campaign on his record in Parliament and development projects undertaken during his tenure.

Political observers note that for Omasete to mount a serious challenge, he will need to build a strong grassroots campaign across the constituency, unite local leaders behind his bid and present a compelling alternative vision that resonates with voters.

Among the issues likely to dominate the campaign are youth unemployment, road infrastructure, access to quality healthcare, education, agricultural support and economic opportunities for local businesses. Voters are also expected to scrutinise the candidates’ leadership records and their ability to attract national development resources to Teso North.

As a newcomer to elective politics, Omasete’s greatest task will be transforming his public service experience into political support at the ballot box. He will also need to navigate party politics and assemble a formidable campaign team capable of competing against an experienced incumbent.

With more than a year before the next General Election, the political landscape in Teso North is still evolving. Nevertheless, Patrick Omasete’s entry into the race signals what is shaping up to be a closely watched contest, with voters expected to weigh experience against the promise of fresh leadership as they choose their next Member of Parliament.
