Siyabonga Ngezana Receives Update on Expected FCSB Return
Siyabonga Ngezana Faces Extended Wait for FCSB Return Despite Injury Recovery
Siyabonga Ngezana, the South African international, has made a significant stride in his recovery from a lengthy injury period; however, he is not expected to make his competitive return to Romanian club FCSB until 2027.
The former Kaizer Chiefs center-back has recently resumed training with his teammates after several months sidelined due to a knee injury. While returning to training marks positive progress, FCSB is hesitant to rush him back into matches to safeguard his long-term health.
Ngezana underwent surgery in June to address a meniscus issue that had been plaguing him for a while. The injury occurred during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations while playing for Bafana Bafana and was worsened upon his return to club duties.
The 29-year-old continued to play through discomfort in hopes of being available for South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup quest. However, after missing the final squad, he opted for surgery and began a rehabilitation program focused on his return to fitness.
Since his last competitive appearance in May, he has missed a significant part of the 2026/27 season. Though rejoining group training is a positive step, achieving match fitness after such an extended absence is vital for his recovery.
Adding to the complications surrounding Ngezana’s speed of return is his registration status with FCSB. Reports indicate that the club removed him from the league roster to enable the registration of Croatian midfielder Karlo Muhar, creating further obstacles for Ngezana before he can play in domestic matches.
FCSB officials are reportedly cautious and prefer not to take any unnecessary risks with his recovery. They aim to give him enough time to regain full fitness rather than rush him back at the risk of re-injuring himself.
This decision may be frustrating for Ngezana, who is eager to get back on the field and reclaim his role in the club’s defense. However, given the challenges he has faced, a cautious approach could ultimately benefit his career in the long run.
His absence is also a concern for Bafana Bafana’s coach, Pitso Mosimane, who is keeping an eye on Ngezana’s recovery in light of future international matches.
Ngezana’s experience would be an asset for the national team as they evaluate their defensive lineup. Nevertheless, his immediate goal is to fully recover and return to competitive play before seeking another opportunity with the national squad.
While his return to training is encouraging news, fans will need to be patient. Despite overcoming his initial injury, it appears Ngezana’s competitive comeback won’t happen until 2027, rather than within the current year.
The path forward for the South African defender is clear: achieve full fitness, come back stronger, and move past this frustrating injury phase.
