Nuru Okanga Reacts to Ruto’s Bayern Munich and Ajax Announcement

Political commentator and social media personality Nuru Okanga has dismissed President William Ruto’s announcement that Bayern Munich and Ajax will play a friendly match in Nairobi, saying the information could have been shared through a simple WhatsApp status. Okanga reacted on Wednesday, October 28, after the President revealed plans for the fixture at the newly named Raila Odinga International Stadium.

Ruto announced that the German and Dutch football giants would meet on January 5, 2027, during the official opening of the facility, previously known as Talanta Stadium. The announcement followed a State House notice promising a major presidential address at 6 pm, prompting speculation among Kenyans about what the President intended to reveal.

Okanga suggested that the announcement did not match the anticipation it had generated. In a post shared online, he wrote that the information could simply have been communicated through WhatsApp. He then urged his followers to turn their attention to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was expected to appear in a television interview at 7:30 pm.

Before Ruto’s announcement, Okanga had speculated that Kenyans were expecting news of the President’s resignation. He also predicted that the address might concern the renaming of Talanta Stadium after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He argued that the change would not come as a major surprise because supporters had already called for the facility to honour the late opposition leader.

The 60,000-seat stadium, located along Ngong Road in Nairobi, is expected to support Kenya’s preparations for major international sporting events, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The planned Bayern Munich versus Ajax fixture will bring two prominent European clubs to the capital for the stadium’s opening. However, Okanga’s reaction centred on the build-up to the announcement and whether the revelation justified the expectations created beforehand.
