Bawumia, Vehicle Dealers agree to scrap proposed pre-shipment inspection of cars
Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reached an agreement with the leadership of the Vehicles and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana (VADUG) on the need to abolish the proposed pre-shipment inspection of imported vehicles.
The agreement was reached during a stakeholder engagement aimed at identifying challenges confronting vehicle dealers and exploring policy measures to improve business conditions in the automobile industry.
In a Facebook post, Dr Bawumia disclosed that the meeting formed part of his ongoing consultations with industry players to better understand their concerns and identify opportunities for growth.
According to him, discussions focused on high vehicle import duties, delays in clearing vehicles at the country’s ports and the proposed introduction of pre-shipment inspections.
He indicated that both parties agreed that the proposed pre-shipment inspection policy should be abolished.
The former Vice President also engaged the union’s leadership on difficulties vehicle dealers face in accessing credit facilities, particularly financing opportunities through the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).
Another major concern raised during the discussions was the need for stronger enforcement of existing laws to protect Ghanaian vehicle retailers against unfair competition from foreign retailers.
Dr Bawumia said the engagement provided an opportunity for the union to outline the difficulties affecting its members and propose measures to create a more favourable business environment.
He explained that the discussions were productive and would be followed by further engagements between his team and representatives of the union.
“The discussions were fruitful and our respective teams will continue engagement to iron out specific policies to be introduced,” he stated.
Dr Bawumia expressed appreciation to the leadership of VADUG for participating in the consultations and sharing their perspectives on challenges facing the industry.
The engagement forms part of his efforts to solicit views from stakeholders on policies aimed at addressing business challenges and supporting the growth of Ghana’s private sector.
