“David Mahlobo Introduced ANC And SSA Operatives In EFF Spying Plot” Court Revealed, Check Out
Former South African State Security Minister David Mahlobo has been linked to allegations involving an intelligence operation that allegedly targeted the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Court proceedings have reportedly heard claims that Mahlobo introduced individuals connected to the African National Congress (ANC) and State Security Agency (SSA) operatives who were allegedly involved in the operation.
The allegations have raised fresh concerns about the possible misuse of South Africa’s intelligence structures and whether public resources were used to advance political interests.
The EFF has previously raised concerns about an alleged intelligence operation known as Project Mayibuye. According to the party, the operation involved the alleged infiltration of its parliamentary caucus, surveillance of its leadership and efforts to weaken the organisation from within.
The opposition party has further claimed that public funds were used to monitor its activities and persuade influential members to abandon the EFF and return to the ANC.
In its response to the allegations, the EFF accused certain individuals within the intelligence establishment of abusing their positions to undermine the party. It also alleged that Mahlobo helped facilitate the operation by hosting handlers and intelligence operatives at his private residence.
However, the allegations have not been established as proven facts, and the claims against those implicated must be assessed through the appropriate legal processes.
Mahlobo has previously faced questions about his alleged involvement in the operational activities of the SSA while serving as state security minister. During the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture in 2021, intelligence officials gave testimony concerning his alleged participation in operational matters that they believed extended beyond his ministerial oversight responsibilities.
One of the witnesses, identified by the pseudonym Steven, told the commission that Mahlobo allegedly involved himself in intelligence operations and instructed officials to intervene in specific assignments.
The testimony formed part of wider investigations into alleged wrongdoing within the intelligence agency, including concerns about how money allocated for covert operations was handled and spent.
Mahlobo has previously denied allegations that he improperly interfered in intelligence operations. During his appearance before the state capture commission, he challenged aspects of the evidence presented against him and questioned the disclosure of sensitive intelligence information.
The latest allegations surrounding Project Mayibuye have once again brought the relationship between political parties and South Africa’s intelligence services into the spotlight.
The SSA is tasked with gathering intelligence related to national security. However, allegations that its resources were used to monitor an opposition political party have raised serious questions about accountability, political independence and the safeguards designed to prevent the abuse of intelligence powers.
The EFF has called for the allegations to be investigated and for those found responsible to face accountability. The party maintains that intelligence resources should be used to protect the country’s interests rather than advance the political ambitions of individuals or organisations.
The ongoing legal proceedings could reveal further information about the alleged operation, including the identities of those involved, the roles they reportedly played, the instructions they allegedly received and whether public money was used to support the activities.
For now, the allegations remain subject to scrutiny. Evidence presented during the proceedings, responses from the individuals implicated and any eventual findings by the relevant authorities will be crucial in determining what happened and whether any laws were violated.
