Opoku-Agyemang Calls for Accessible Cancer Care

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called for improved access to cancer diagnosis and treatment across Ghana, stressing the need to extend specialist medical services to communities outside Greater Accra.

She said efforts by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to establish satellite centres in partnership with the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre could help ease the challenges patients face in travelling long distances to receive treatment.

The Vice President made the remarks at the launch of the 2026 Thank You Teacher National Raffle Campaign, where she emphasised the importance of early detection, prompt medical intervention and sustained assistance for cancer patients and their caregivers.

According to her, early diagnosis can improve treatment options and outcomes, but public awareness must be accompanied by accessible diagnostic facilities and appropriate medical care.

She noted that transportation expenses and the distance to specialist health facilities often place additional burdens on patients and their families.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended GNAT for its plans to extend cancer services beyond Accra and encouraged stakeholders to support government efforts to improve cancer care nationwide.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, Dr Clement Egyin Edusa, disclosed that the facility was in the process of onboarding the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, to provide support for cancer treatment.

GNAT President Prosper Tachie also appealed to the government to allocate funds in the national budget to ensure the centre’s continued operations.

The Thank You Teacher National Raffle Campaign is designed to honour teachers for their contributions to education while raising funds to support the Cancer Foundation at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre.
