Linus Kaikai Reveals Why Yvonne Okwara’s Departure From Citizen TV Was Difficult to Accept

Royal Media Services editorial director Linus Kaikai has led emotional tributes to veteran journalist Yvonne Okwara following her departure from Citizen TV, describing her exit as one of the most difficult farewells he has experienced.

Okwara presented her final news bulletin at Citizen TV’s Nairobi studios on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, bringing an end to a significant chapter in her broadcasting career. Her departure prompted colleagues to reflect on her professionalism, dedication and contribution to Kenyan journalism.

Kaikai, who has overseen numerous newsroom transitions during his leadership, said Okwara’s decision was particularly difficult to accept after learning that she intended to leave journalism altogether rather than join another media organisation.

He praised her commitment to the profession, noting that her ability to ask challenging questions and handle demanding assignments had helped establish her reputation as one of the country’s respected television journalists.

Kaikai also recalled Okwara’s contribution to Kenya’s 2022 presidential debates, where she demonstrated her interviewing skills while engaging political leaders on important national issues.

He described her departure as a loss not only for Citizen TV and Royal Media Services but also for the wider media industry.

Other colleagues shared emotional messages during the farewell, highlighting the working relationship and chemistry Okwara brought to the programme she anchored. A cake and warm exchanges marked the occasion, while a video of the send-off circulated on Citizen TV’s social media platforms.

Okwara also expressed gratitude to her colleagues and acknowledged Kaikai’s influence during her time at the station, describing him as a demanding boss whom she respected.

Her exit has generated considerable discussion among viewers who have followed her career and watched her interview politicians and analyse issues affecting Kenyans.

Although her next move remains unclear, her decision to step away from journalism marks a major transition after years in the media industry.

Many viewers will now be waiting to see what the experienced journalist chooses to pursue in her next chapter.
