Betty Bayo’s Widower Tash Breaks Silence After Court Hands Kanyari Custody of Late Singer’s Children
Betty Bayo’s widower, Hiram Gitau, popularly known as Tash, has broken his silence following a court ruling granting controversial preacher Pastor Victor Kanyari custody of the late gospel singer’s two children, Sky and Danny.
Tash addressed the contentious decision during a TikTok livestream on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, sharing his views on the ongoing family dispute that has attracted widespread attention across Kenya.
According to TUKO.co.ke, Tash questioned Kanyari’s claim to the children from the perspective of Kikuyu customary traditions, arguing that the payment of bride price plays a significant role in determining family relationships.
He maintained that, under the traditions he cited, a man’s parental claim to children is connected to whether bride price was paid to the mother’s family.
Applying this argument to the dispute, Tash suggested that Kanyari’s position did not align with the customary principles he was discussing.
His remarks have added another dimension to the already heated custody battle, which began following Betty Bayo’s death in November 2025.
The gospel singer died while married to Tash, whom she wed after separating from Kanyari.
Her two children from her previous relationship had been living with her and Tash before her death.
The court ruling has triggered emotional reactions, particularly after reports that Sky and Danny expressed a desire to remain with Tash rather than move in with their biological father.
Sky recently took to Facebook Live to voice her frustration over the decision, appealing to Kenyans for support and describing the situation as painful for her and her younger brother.
Her emotional reaction has sparked widespread discussion about the importance of considering children’s wishes in custody disputes.
Meanwhile, legal commentary surrounding the case has focused on the rights and responsibilities of a surviving biological parent following the death of a mother.
Advocate Danstan Omari previously explained that Kenyan law recognises the parental rights of a surviving biological father, while arrangements such as formal adoption or guardianship can affect custody.
The dispute has placed Tash and Kanyari at the centre of public debate, with many Kenyans following developments closely.
As the family navigates the difficult situation, attention remains focused on the children’s welfare and how their emotional needs will be addressed following the loss of their mother.
The matter continues to generate strong reactions online, with questions surrounding parental rights, customary traditions and the children’s preferences dominating conversations.
