GOIL’s share price climbed 4.56% to close at GH¢5.50, placing the oil marketing company at the forefront of the Ghana Stock Exchange’s (GSE) gainers. The performance offered a bright spot in a session characterised by declining trading volume, lower turnover and contrasting movements among listed equities.

Trading data showed that investors exchanged 798,643 shares valued at GH¢2,004,536.94. Compared with the previous trading session on Monday, October 26, share volume declined by 12%, while market turnover fell by 15%.

Despite the slowdown in activity, the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) advanced, indicating that selected share price gains were sufficient to lift the broader market indicator.

GOIL emerged as the standout performer, recording a 4.56% appreciation in its share price to close at GH¢5.50 per share.

The gain placed the oil marketing company ahead of three other equities that also finished the session in positive territory, highlighting the contrasting fortunes of companies listed on the local bourse.

SIC Insurance Company followed with a 1.77% increase, while CalBank recorded a 1.37% gain. MTN Ghana also advanced by 0.62%, rounding off the four equities that closed higher during the session.

The performance of these stocks helped sustain the market’s upward movement despite the larger number of declining equities.

The gains also came at a time when the market continued to register substantial year-to-date growth, with the GSE Composite Index maintaining an increase of more than 60% since the beginning of the year.

However, the latest session’s results do not necessarily indicate a broad-based rally. Only four of the 27 equities that participated in trading recorded gains, suggesting that positive price movements remained concentrated in a relatively small group of stocks.

While GOIL attracted attention on the gaining side, Hords Limited recorded the steepest decline among the reported losers.

The company’s share price dropped by 6.25% to close at GH¢0.75, making it the session’s weakest performer.

Intravenous Infusions followed with a 5.56% decline, reflecting another substantial loss among the equities that ended the day in negative territory.

TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana also recorded a decline of 2.44%, while Kasapreko fell by 0.55%.

In total, five equities ended the session lower, compared with four gainers among the 27 listed companies that participated in trading.

The combination of rising and falling share prices reflects the uneven nature of activity on the exchange, where individual companies can experience sharply different outcomes within the same trading session.

For investors tracking the market, such movements reinforce the importance of assessing individual stock performance alongside the broader index. An increase in the benchmark index does not mean that every listed company has benefited equally.

Trading activity was concentrated in a handful of companies, with Kasapreko recording the highest volume of transactions during the session.

The beverage producer registered 233,811 shares traded, making it the most actively traded equity by volume.

CalBank followed closely with 225,685 shares, while MTN Ghana recorded 116,877 shares. Intravenous Infusions completed the leading group with 111,317 shares traded.

Together, these figures highlight the significant contribution of a small number of equities to overall market activity.

Kasapreko’s position as the most actively traded stock is particularly notable because the company’s share price declined by 0.55% during the session. Its trading activity therefore coincided with a modest price loss rather than an increase.

Intravenous Infusions also featured among the most actively traded companies while recording a 5.56% decline in its share price.

The figures illustrate why trading volume and share price performance must be considered separately. High trading activity does not automatically translate into positive returns, as the direction of price movements depends on the balance between buying and selling pressure.

The GSE Composite Index advanced by 38.80 points, representing a 0.28% increase, to close at 14,052.96 points.

The gain provided a positive close for the broader market, although the index continued to face short-term pressure when measured over longer periods.

The GSE-CI recorded a one-week loss of 0.68% and a four-week decline of 0.46%. However, its year-to-date performance remained firmly positive at 60.23%.

This substantial annual gain highlights the strength of the market’s performance since the beginning of the year, even as recent trading sessions have produced more mixed results.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also advanced, rising by 0.07% to close at 7,358.62 points.

Despite the daily improvement, the financial stocks index recorded a one-week loss of 1.27% and a four-week decline of 1.92%. Its year-to-date gain stood at 58.35%.

The contrasting daily and longer-term figures suggest that the latest gains have not fully reversed the recent weakness experienced by both indices.

The total market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange stood at GH¢265 billion, equivalent to approximately US$22.8 billion, at the close of the session.

The valuation reflects the aggregate market value of listed equities and provides a broader measure of the exchange’s size.

However, the decline in trading volume and turnover suggests that the latest session was less active than the previous trading day, despite the improvement in the benchmark indices.

As the market continues to record strong year-to-date gains, investors will be watching whether the recent weakness in short-term performance gives way to renewed buying interest.

GOIL’s 4.56% advance provided one of the session’s strongest individual performances, but the declines recorded by Hords, Intravenous Infusions and other equities demonstrated that gains remain uneven across the market.

The next trading sessions will offer further insight into whether the benchmark indices can sustain their upward movement and whether investor participation will recover from the latest slowdown.
